Meanwhile, those who smoked 31-60 minutes after waking up had 1.31 times the risk compared to those who wait at least an hour.

It is unclear what causes the initial genetic mutations that lead to mesothelioma although scientists identify factors that may increase the risk. Cancer may result from a combination of several factors, such as heredity, environment, health condition and lifestyle.

Benign pleural mesothelioma
Benign tumors that form in the chest sometimes called benign mesothelioma. But the term is misleading. Benign mesothelioma is not started on the same cell where the cancer is formed. And in some cases kacil, benign mesothelioma can be very aggressive. For this reason, some doctors now prefer to call this tumor as a solitary fibrous tumor.

Skin Creams containing Vitamin C - Do They Actually Work?

Ever since Noble Prize winning scientist Dr. Linus Pauling, proclaimed the wonders of Vitamin C, it has become one of the most widely used ingredients in anti-wrinkle and anti-aging creams.

Vitamin C-based anti-wrinkle creams promising amazing results are popping up like mushrooms all over our country.

Do their claims have any substance? The situation is a little *complicated*. On one hand, vitamin C does possess definite, scientifically validated merits for wrinkle reduction and skin rejuvenation. On the other hand, most anti-wrinkle vitamin C products do not work…and worse…may end up aggravating wrinkle formation.

What do I mean by this? You see, potentially vitamin C can benefit our skin in EXTREMELY IMPORTANT ways such as:

1. Collagen Synthesis: Collagen makes up about 70% of our skin’s dry weight. As any material, it is subject to wear and tear, and slowly breaks down over time. In our youth, fibroblasts (skin cells – capable of producing collagen) replace broken collagen fibers. But as we age our skin’s ability to replace damaged collagen diminishes. This leads to wrinkles and sagging skin.

We could apply collagen creams but remember, collagen being a big molecule does not penetrate our skin and may expose us to the dangers of mad cow disease.

Once again, this is what Dr. Rubin was quoted saying in an article in the New York Times:

“Collagen doesn’t penetrate… You can’t get the collagen molecule into your skin. It’s like taking a steak and rubbing it on your skin to try to make your muscles large.”

We could get collagen injections, but one of the main drawbacks (besides costs) is injected collagen is quickly broken up by enzymes and can only be replenished by more injections…meaning thousands of more dollars! Besides the danger of mad cow disease, there are reports of connective tissue disease arising after collagen injections.

The good news is, applying vitamin C helps dramatically plump up thinning skin by increasing its production of NEW COLLAGEN. With Vitamin C stimulating your own collagen production there is no known risk of allergy, no immune reaction and no injection-induced infection. Just natural collagen being deposited in an orderly fashion…rapidly bringing back with it your skin’s softness, strength and elasticity.

2. Antioxidant: Vitamin C is an antioxidant — a substance that vanquishes free radicals, those vicious molecules that irreparably damage our cells and accelerate the aging process.

3. Blood Capillary Strengthener: Vitamin C strengthens blood capillaries… which means fewer broken capillaries are visible on your face.

4. Enhances Skin Brightness: Got “age spots” or “liver spots”? We all have them. They form because of hyperpigmentation; a condition in which patches of our skin become darker in color than surrounding skin. The good news is that application of Vitamin C helps regulate the production of dark color producing cells. It helps correct and restore the balance of lackluster skin, dark patches and blotchiness. This evens your skin tone and results in a dramatic improvement in skin radiance.

5. Prevents Transepidermal Water Loss: Vitamin C helps reduce evaporative water loss from your skin, thus retaining moisture within the skin.

Botox users may have reasons to frown…

Here’s the other half of the story:

1. Botox addresses only one aspect of facial rejuvenation — motion wrinkles. It does not reduce fine lines, sun damage, skin roughness, nor does it help with acne scars, uneven pigmentation or age spots.

2. The FDA has only approved Botox for use on an extremely limited area (less than 5% of our entire face). That area is the tiny little space where sometimes there is a furrow between your eyebrows. You can’t use Botox ANYWHERE ELSE!

3. Botox users might be surprised to learn they’re actually receiving injections of a bacterial neurotoxin called botulinum, one of the most poisonous substances known. Exposure to large amounts of it can cause DEATH.

4. The effect of Botox injections almost completely disappear within 3 to 6 months. After which you need to again and again set up appointments with a doctor, get a new set of injections and spend more money (about $700)…every 3 to 6 months.

5. Regular injections risk skin and nerve damage and actually thin the skin exacerbating some skin problems.

6. Sometime ago, a couple was in a critical condition in Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, breathing through ventilators and being fed intravenously after receiving adulterated Botox injections.

7. Pregnant women and women who are breast feeding should not undergo Botox treatment as there has been limited research of its effects on unborn fetuses and infants.

The evils of caffeine

Charles Czeisler, a neuroscientist and sleep expert from Harvard Medical School explains: “When the nature of work changed from a schedule built around the sun to an indoor job timed by a clock, humans had to adapt. The widespread use of caffeinated food and drink—in combination with the invention of electric light—allowed people to cope with a work schedule set by the clock, not by daylight or the natural sleep cycle.” In addition, scientific studies have shown that the power boost of caffeine is connected with its interference with adenosine – a chemical in our bodies, which has hypnotic effect and works as a natural sleeping pill. Caffeine actually ceases adenosine and in this way our alertness gets increased and our sleep habits are disrupted. As we all know, there’s no such thing as a free lunch and we pay for this extra wakefulness.

Health concerns:

Experts from the FDA claim that our health is in danger as long as the consumption remains between 200 mg to 300 mg of caffeine per day, which is equal to around two or three cups of coffee. They also say that caffeine contains components such as Niacin, Magnesium and Potassium, which play a vital role for our health: Potassium is essential for nerves function, Magnesium is of importance in our bones and teeth and Niacin aids in the metabolism of sugars and has an essential role for the proper function of intestines. If consumed moderately, caffeine acts as an anti-oxidant, sucking up free radicals. Unfortunately, the refreshing effects of caffeine urge us to constantly increase consumption in order to eliminate brain fog and fatigue.

Caffeine is an addictive drug, which alters our brain’s natural state and stimulates it in a manner similar to mechanisms employed by cocaine and heroin: it provokes a release of adrenalin, so that the body remains active and alert. It also manipulates dopamine production and that’s how we experience temporary high levels of energy; our productivity improves and we become more coordinated. Caffeine affects our whole body, stimulating the cardiovascular system, raising our blood pressure and heart rate. This process speeds up our basal metabolic rate and we burn more calories. As a result we obtain a wakeup jolt, because caffeine evokes a stress response in our adrenal hormones, the so called “fight-or-flight” response. This is how our body prepares for action and remains in the state of alertness, no matter if we are sitting on our desks, or reading our newspaper on the sofa. When stress hormones remain elevated for long periods of time, our bodies experience chronic stress, which provokes exhaustion and craving for the next sip of coffee, coke or soda.

Exactly how caffeine affects us depends on many factors, including the amount ingested, our individual peculiarities (sex, weight and height, age) and whether we are smokers or non-smokers. Studies show that some people are more sensitive to its effects than others. However, when consumed frequently our body develops tolerance to caffeine and this represents a significant health risk. At doses of 600 mg, or 6 cups of coffee, caffeine can lead to:

- Restlessness and anxiety

- Heartburn – caffeine is alkaline, which spurs the stomach to react by dumping more hydrochloric acid as a neuralizer

- Severe headaches and sweating

- High blood pressure

- Heart problems and rapid palpitations

- Nausea

- Muscle stiffness – caffeine increases the loss of calcium and magnesium, which has a negative impact on muscle tissues, impeding their relaxation mechanism.

- Withdrawal symptoms may also occur, even when moderate amounts of caffeine are withdrawn for 18 to 48 hours. One may feel severe exhaustion, depression and poor concentration.

Strategies for reduction of caffeine intake and tips to give it up completely:

In order to gradually reduce the amount of caffeine intake a good tactic is to reduce the number of coffee cups by one every week (For example: 4 cups a day in the first week, 3 in the second, 2 in the third, 1 in the fourth). In this way the withdrawal symptoms will be much less severe.

Another strategy which can help our body get rid of caffeine addiction is to use less coffee. Every morning we should use put less teaspoons of coffee into our coffee machine, until it is so weak that we can live without it.

We can also switch to tea, as it has lower amounts of caffeine. Every day we can switch over one of our coffee breaks to tea. Once we achieve a successful transition to tea, we should repeat the process to transition to caffeine-free tea.

Sleep is a very important natural source of energy and that’s why we need to ensure a quality and regular sleep while we are transitioning to our caffeine-free state.

In addition we could include morning aerobic exercise, like cycling or running. This will make us feel full of energy, because sport unlocks the production of endorphins (one of the hormones of happiness) and we will be able to start our day on a natural high.

We also have to make sure that we don’t lose our connection with nature. In fact, many people suffer from depression because of the unnatural life our modern society leads us into. Thus, make it a ritual to go outside and deep breathe fresh air in the morning.

Change your diet. Drink orange Juice, or eat fresh fruits in order to nourish your body with vitamin C. Coffee is a habit. Replace it with a small glass of fresh pressed orange juice. Have a grain or oats based breakfast (with a low glycemic index). It will keep your brain nourished all morning. Avoid sugary breakfasts like donuts or high sugar cakes or muffins. They lead to a rapid buildup and slump in our blood sugar levels. Also, have an afternoon snack. Keep an apple or banana or a handful of cashew nuts ready for the mid-afternoon snack time instead of coffee. Finally, drink more water: carry a water bottle around and take sips regularly.

Your Diet and Your Cholesterol Level

Have you had lab work and your doctor told you, 'Your cholesterol level is high!!.'? I will attempt to share with you a number of foods that will help fix those bad numbers and some information on how you can eat more wisely.
Cholesterol lowering foods:
Listed are some cholesterol lowering foods: Apples, almonds, avocados, bananas, barley, beans, carrots, chili peppers, eggplant, green plantains, soybeans, spinach, sweet potatoes, walnuts, yams and yogurt with active culture.
This is the way some of the foods mentioned above will benefit you and help you to bring your cholesterol number down.
Soy beans and the products derived from them, such as soy milk, lecithin and tofu help break down fatty deposits so they can be flushed from the body more readily.
Yogurt; beware of yogurt substitutes, read the label, plain yogurt is your best bet. Use a blender to make smoothies using fresh fruit.
Medium sized carrots, eat three daily, this alone has been known to reduce the cholesterol level by as much as eleven percent.
Chili peppers reduce blood serum cholesterol levels by suppressing the liver's ability to produce cholesterol.
Garlic; five fresh raw cloves minced into other food daily for 25 days has been shown to lower serum cholesterol by nearly ten percent.
Studies have found that antioxidants in wine lowers cholesterol. Grape juice works just as well. Grape juice contains reveratrol, a naturally occurring chemical in wine that lowers cholesterol. The bioflavonoid is found in the skin of the purple grape. That bioflavonoid is the bullet in the gun of Vitamin C, it enhances Vitamin C's benefits to the body.
Be fat smart! There IS good fat that lowers cholesterol! Bad fats are saturated, they are derived from animals. Good fats go by a variety of names. PUFAS or polyunsaturated fatty acids. PUFAS is a generic term for all the essential fatty acids (EFA). They are called 'essential' because the body cannot make them so they must be in the diet. Essential Fatty Acids are required for growth, development and maintenance of cell membranes, including those of the central nervous system. A deficiency of EFAS has been linked to heart disease. Foods found to lower cholesterol are high in essential fatty acids; fish, un-roasted nuts, seeds and the oils from them.
Say no to margarine! Margarine is not heart smart! Margarine is a trans fat. A diet high in saturated fat raises the level of the bad guy, LDL cholesterol. But a diet high in trans fatty acid both increases bad cholesterol AND decreases good guy, HDL cholesterol -- a double whammy! A small amount of trans fats comes from dairy products and beef, but the majority or major source is margarine, particularly the hard margarine and shortenings made by hydrogenated plant oils. The Harvard School of Public Health now proclaims that partially hydrogenated vegetable oil found in margarine and shortening may be attributed to approximately 30,000 deaths each year.
Follow these suggestions and guidelines and your next laboratory report WILL have better numbers!

Valuable Resources on CCSVI and Multiple Sclerosis

Such nerve damage occurs because of inflammation. Inflammation is caused by an overactive immune system that results in the body attacking itself. Repeated occurrences of inflammation can appear in any area of the brain, spinal cord or optic nerve.
Multiple Sclerosis sufferers deal with a wide range of symptoms on a daily basis. Much about the disease is unknown by the medical community, such as what causes it. There is also no guaranteed cure for the condition. It is therefore helpful for people with MS to have access to online and offline resources and communities for mutual support and to share their unique experiences.
Amy Gurowitz has created the 'MS LOL' (Life of Learning) blog. She hosts online radio shows on important MS topics. Amy has MS herself and is optimistic and lighthearted. In addition to 'MS LOL' Amy is also in the process of creating the 'MS Softserve' website, a new resource that helps you navigate MS and the internet. You can create an individual URL with your specific symptoms on it and customize your online learning experience. The site is important as searching the internet for MS information can be very overwhelming and frustrating.
Other interesting blogs are 'Wheelchair Kamikaze' and 'Brass and Ivory', whose authors have been guests on Amy Gurowitz's radio show. The latter website has a page called 'Carnival of MS Bloggers', which unites MS bloggers and showcases some of the best MS blog posts on the web. 'MS Views and News' is also very useful for staying updated on all the latest MS information.
MS has been linked with CCSVI, a condition that is characterized by blocked or narrowed veins in the brain or spinal area. Deoxygenated blood is unable to flow properly from the brain back to the heart. It becomes embedded in the brain's tissues which results in a lack of oxygen.
CCSVI is a recently discovered health condition and stands for chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency. The term was coined by Paolo Zamboni, an Italian doctor whose wife suffers from MS. He also developed a CCSVI treatment, often referred to as 'the liberation procedure'. In the studies he conducted in 2006 and 2008 Zamboni found that patients who were treated for CCSVI saw a significant improvement in their MS symptoms.
CCSVI treatment involves a venogram, which is a test for CCSVI, and a venoplasty procedure, which is a balloon angioplasty treatment for the vein. In some cases a stent, a tiny mesh insert, is used although this is rare.
Angeles Health International, Mexico's largest hospital network, runs regular webinars on CCSVI. MS patients can learn about CCSVI treatment and ask the doctors who perform the procedure any questions. As well as detailing what CCSVI is, which most participants tend to know, the webinar host also describes the CCSVI process and facilities at Angeles hospital in Tijuana.

Best Hemorrhoid Treatments - The Three Best Hemorrhoid Cures

What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are a swollen veins condition in the anus which is usually not serious but still needs medical attention as it can be painful. There are two types of hemorrhoids, the internal and external hemorrhoid. A sign that you have internal hemorrhoids are painless rectal bleeding. External hemorrhoids, on the other hand presents pain in the anus area.

What causes Hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids occurs when you put too much strain on the veins of your pelvic and rectal area. The tissues in your anus naturally help control your bowel movements by filling the veins up with blood. When you increase pressure, the veins will swell and hemorrhoids happen. The pressure can be caused by three events: when you have a diarrhea or constipation, if you are pregnant wherein pushing baby out adds pressure to the pelvic area, and if you are overweight. Though hemorrhoids might not be thought to be serious, it is uncomfortable, painful and sometimes gets worse. You need to know what m
ight be the best hemorrhoid treatment for you.

How to treat hemorrhoids?
There are a number of ways to treat hemorrhoids The simplest way is to increase of your fiber intake and drink lots of water. The measures below might be the best hemorrhoid treatment for you if drinking and fiber intake does not work.  1. Best hemorrhoids treatment at home      Do not make your hemorrhoids worse. As much as possible, be careful when putting too much pressure in your pelvic and rectal area. A good rest will eventually make it subside.     Wipe your anus with moistened toilet paper or baby wipes. Toilet paper moistened with cleansing agent will suffice as well as pre-moistened towels.     Do not rub your anal area too vigorously as it will put pressure around the anal area. Rinse it off with a shower attachment or bidet.     Use soap that does not contain any perfumes or coloring.     Sitz baths are used to ease pain and discomfort in your body lower area. This may help ease your hemorrhoid pains.  2. Best hemorrhoid treatment Medications      Best hemorrhoid treatment ointments for topical application are ointments with petroleum jelly or zinc oxide. These components protect skin from further injury. Ointments are used to lessen itchiness as it form barriers around the hemorrhoid area.     Suppositories can help lubricate anal canal as well as relieving irritation.     Topical ointment with 1% hydrocortisone may relieve itching and inflammation. This is not however advisable to use for more that two weeks as it may make the skin of your anus area thin.     Take over the counter nonprescription NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to fight the pain and to lessen the swelling.  3. Best hemorrhoid treatment surgery procedures  Surgical procedures are probably the best hemorrhoid treatment for severe cases of hemorrhoids.      Hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure wherein the hemorrhoids will be removed and needs 2 to 4 weeks to recover.     Doppler, a guided minimal invasive treatment procedure that ties off arteries to put back into its normal position. Recurrence rate is higher than Hemorrhoidectomy but this has lesser complications.     Stapled hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure that resections soft tissue to disrupt blood flow to hemorrhoids. This is less painful then Hemorrhoidectomy  Whatever the condition of your hemorrhoids, it is your choice what will be the best hemorrhoid treatment for you. Consult your doctor if your condition gets worse and you think you need to have a surgery.  Read more about this annoying and embarrassing condition at http://www.hemorrhoidtreatmentz.com.

What Doctors Won't Tell You About Scoliosis Rib Hump Deformity

Scoliosis comes generally in two forms "S" or "C" type curve patterns. "S" curves commonly referred to as double majors have a curve in the thoracic spine and a curve in the lumbar spine which are similar in size. The typical pattern for an "S" curve scoliosis is a right thoracic and a left lumbar meaning the concave side in a left lumbar curve is to the right. This would look like an S from the front or a backward S from the back. "S" curves will typically demonstrate a posture presentation that is fairly centered on the midline when viewed from the front or back where their head, torso, and pelvis line up but their eyeline, shoulder line, and hip line will be tilted. The double curve type will lead to two noticeable bumps that form as a "S" scoliosis progresses beyond 30 degrees. When a bending test is performed and the patient is viewed from behind while they bend down to touch their toes the examiner will notice a protrusion by the shoulder blade and a protrusion by in the lower back muscles.
This protrusion is due to the natural adaptation of the postural muscles to the scoliosis and is not causing the scoliosis. The smaller intrinsic or deep smaller muscles that connect each individual bone of the spine are influenced by the brain and the signal from the brain to the deeper smaller muscles is most likely the cause where these protruding muscles along the outside of the curvatures are secondary adaptations. So the brain tells the spine what position to be in and the posture muscle set the tone to stabilize this position as neutral. Since the spine becomes curved the muscles of posture on the outside of the curve will increase in mass, called hypertrophy, due to constant use for stabilization whereas the inside posture muscles will no longer be needed to stabilize the spine and will atrophy, decrease in mass, due to disuse. Think of the posture muscles as a light switch with a dimmer attached, the dimmer switch can be changed to either allow more current or less current to the bulb making it brighter or dimmer where the outside of the scoliosis curvature is given a lot of current and gets brighter (hypertrophy) and the inside of the curvature gets very little current and is dim(atrophy). The larger the scoliosis becomes the more noticeable the difference in brightness or muscle tone. It is not a case of weak or strong but rather how much current is being supplied due to need to remain stable in gravity.
Secondary adaptations to the "S" curve will involve disc wedge deformation and eventually bone wedge deformation. These secondary adaptations occur due to cellular remodeling. Direct pressure on the cartilaginous discs and the individual vertebrae will stimulate or inhibit growth creating an actual difference in the height of the disc or bone. Ribcage deformation will become noticeable with much larger curves in this type of pattern and will be somewhat limited due to the smaller size of thoracic curvature. The ribcage and individual ribs will also deform due to direct pressure since bone remodels based on its stress demands (Heuter- Volkmann principle) when ribs are placed under excessive pressure they will change shape. As the spinal column bends and rotates in the thoracic region this will then create direct forces upon the ribs since they are attached to each individual thoracic vertebrae. The further the spine pushes laterally to the side the more forces will affect the entire cage adding to the ribcage deformation. If we go back to the bending test and notice the two protrusions that appear in an "S" pattern scoliosis the protrusion in the thoracic region will eventually become structural deformation because of the ribs becoming bent. Since the lumbar spine does not have ribs attached the bulging protrusion in this region is limited to the muscle and remains purely soft tissue even in adulthood whereas the individual vertebrae regardless of location will become structural adaptation with time.
"C" curves are a bit misunderstood and can probably be defined differently depending on who you ask. "C" curves generally refer to a scoliosis which has a single major curve in the shape of the letter "C" in either the thoracic spine or the lumbar spine. The real distinguishing factor between "S" pattern and "C" pattern scoliosis is whether or not the compensation curves cross the midline by at least half the distance of the primary curve giving it the S shape. "C" curves generally will demonstrate an awkward posture, meaning the patients neutral stance will appear like they are favoring one leg. "C" curves formed in the thoracic spine will demonstrate much larger ribcage deformity based on the sheer number of thoracic vertebrae involved in this type of curve pattern. C type thoracic curves will have noticeable body disfigurement not easily hidden by clothing especially in curves approaching 40 degrees or higher. The soft tissue adaptations are less prominent and generally deeper due to the structural integrity of the ribcage compared to the lumbar spine where a "C" curve located in this region will demonstrate very large protruding muscle growth.
The ribcage deformity is not corrected by any form of bracing or scoliosis fusion surgery. The only way to reduce or eliminate the larger more angulated rib deformations is to perform a rib resection surgery where they shave it off like a side of beef. The moral of this story is that scoliosis is a very complex organized deformity that presents very young and if not attacked head on in the early stages of the game will lead to an enormous amount of tissue adaptations that become irreversible. So waiting around for this process to unfold is obviously a bad decision.

Weathering Back to School

The media is awash with Back To School trends and tips on the latest fashions, the newest gadgets, and the coolest places to shop. But no one seems to be offering their thoughts on Back to School weather tips.

Now, you may be wondering what weather has to do with going back to school. And you might just be surprised to find out that the answer is, quite a bit.

Dehydration: Strenuous sports, like football and soccer, are often physically demanding for children... particularly after a long relaxing summer without much physical activity. According to May Clinic, children struggle with intense exercise in hot, humid weather even more than adults. In fact, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that 3,469 children were treated in emergency rooms from 2001-2009 for heat-related illnesses sustained while participating in a sport or recreational activity.

Tip: Send one or two frozen bottles of water to school with your child. By the time practice rolls around, the water will be ready to drink, encouraging your child to stay hydrated before, during and after practice.

Headaches: A recent study completed by Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics identified a surprising connection between children's headaches and inclement weather. Specifically, the study showed that 59% of children were likely to experience headache symptoms during rain or snow versus 22% experiencing similar symptoms when there was no precipitation in the forecast. This same pattern held true during times of heightened humidity.

Tip: Be informed about approaching weather fronts so that you can proactively manage your child's headache before it results in lost days at school.

Reduced Visibility: When bad weather - like fog, rain or snow - strikes, drivers often have a more difficult time seeing pedestrians. Children walking to school or to their bus stop may also be paying less attention as they shelter themselves under an umbrella or move quickly towards their destination.

Tip: Talk to your children about being extra careful walking to school or to their bus stop when adverse weather strikes.

Extreme Temperatures: When the thermometer skyrockets or plummets, children are often unprepared for the extreme temperatures, especially if they are not dressed appropriately.

Tip: When temperatures rise, select lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes, along with sunscreen to protect your child's skin. When temperatures drop, select a windproof and waterproof jacket along with a hat, boots and wool clothing to keep your child warm.
